For the moment, this is a repository of materials from a masterclass I taught called “Three Places in America,” focusing on three iconic American musicals, Show Boat (1927), Carousel (1946) and Guys and Dolls (1950). All three are classics and offer a rich array of possibilities for repertoire study; in addition, each one is thematically rich and comes to life when studied in the context of the world of the play and the world of the musical at the time of its creation. I have created a number of short essays which I present here as subpages; I’ve created them for the students in these master classes, but share them happily with all who seek a greater understanding of these musicals and how they might be performed.
